Candid Child Photographer.

This month is kicking my butt.  We’ve all been sick on and off – I haven’t been feeling well most of the month. And this weather is really throwing us. But mostly, it’s just January (insert eye roll here).  I’m sure there are those of you out there who love this month, but I’m not on that list.  I am completely unsurprised that psychologists everywhere have recognized a true disease that rears its head in the winter months called Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).  I don’t have it, but like I said, completely unsurprised it exists. I have been seriously unmotivated, including but not limited to, shooting personal images.  I’ve had some really amazing sessions this month with clients. Really fun, inspiring winter sessions. But for some reason I can’t seem to pick up the camera and shoot my kids with the same gusto as usual. It’s an entirely unsettling feeling.  I love photographing my kids. It’s (usually) my favorite thing to do. So to combat this, I started a personal project to work through the lull. It has not been easy because this one requires me to get in the frame MYSELF.  Once a week.  With or without the kids. Technically this presents all kinds of challenges, but really its the emotional discomfort of being in the frame yourself.  You are out there, vulnerable and frozen in time just exactly the way you are.  But my favorite thing about this project is that it is forcing me to be in more pictures with my kids.  I think this is a universal problem – the “where was mom” dilemma when flipping through family photos.  Mom was taking the photos.  This is one of THE TOP REASONS I love family and maternity sessions.  Mom is in the frame.  It’s so important.  I will treasure these images of me with my kids forever.  My New Year’s Wish is for Moms everywhere to get in the frame.  Hey, if I can do it, so can you 🙂  Here are my 4 for January, one for each week:
